Varuna Steers Green: Tracking Emissions with Climes

Varuna Steers Green: Tracking Emissions with Climes

Varuna Group, a leading logistics provider in India, recognises the growing importance of sustainability within the industry. Committed to taking a proactive approach, Varuna embarked on its journey towards a sustainable future by building with Climes, an innovative carbon emissions calculator. This crucial first step empowers Varuna to measure its environmental impact, laying a strong foundation for the development of effective sustainability strategies.

Embracing sustainability within the logistics industry presented unique challenges for Varuna.

  • Their diverse fleet, with various capacities and numerous use cases, created a multitude of emission calculation scenarios. Accurately accounting for emissions further requires consideration of other factors like load capacity and unladen weight, as well as increasing complexity.

  • Compounding these issues, the lack of readily available and transparent industry tools or datasets made calculating emissions a hurdle.

  • Effectively communicating Varuna's environmental impact to their clients remained a task. The lack of real-time data and a user-friendly tool hampered Varuna's ability to translate its sustainability efforts into clear and actionable information for clients.

STEP 1 /

Signing up for Climes LITE

The Baker's Dozen had signed up on the easy-to-use dashboard, a one-stop shop for all their climate needs. The user-friendly platform provided them with access to the impact they had enabled on a monthly and historical basis, the projects their customers were supporting, marketing and communication references, billing and subscription details, along with a host of other features.

Purchasing Climes

STEP 2 /

The Baker's Dozen set aside a monthly climate budget and subscribed to Climes LITE, allowing them to earn Climes within the dashboard. These earned Climes were then used to support a diverse portfolio of carbon avoidance and removal projects across India, such as waste-to-fuel conversion, reforestation initiatives, and clean cookstove adoption in rural communities.

STEP 3 /

Gifting Climes to customers

The Baker's Dozen could create campaigns that generated QR codes or links. These codes and links led customers to a gamified voting page where they could select the project they wanted to support using their gifted Climes. They decided to allocate 500 Climes per customer for this purpose.

STEP 4 /

Communicating the impact

The Baker's Dozen distributed their QR code through a variety of offline and online campaigns. This strategy seamlessly integrated Climes LITE into the customer journey by printing the QR code directly on their product packaging. As a result, The Baker's Dozen achieved a remarkable 100% voting rate month on month.

Quantifying Carbon Emissions

Leveraging our experience in both technological and carbon accounting, we crafted a formula to address the complexities Varuna faced.

STEP 1 /

Building the Calculator

We delved into Varuna’s specific requirements such as its diverse fleet, with its varying capacities and routes to develop a solution best suited for their needs. This calculator addressed the multifaceted problem, going beyond load capacity, and recorded specific trip details.

STEP 2 /

Seamless Integration

Climes' user-friendly tool seamlessly integrated with Varuna's existing system, eliminating the need for additional software downloads. This ensures effortless adoption by both Varuna and their clients. Data for each client is readily accessible on their Go Green Dashboard, a dedicated portal for clear visualization and convenient use.

STEP 3 /

Data Reporting

The tool enables granular, per-fleet emissions measurement directly on the Go Green Dashboard. This data allowed clients to not only access their real-time shipment carbon emission data and gain clear insights but also identify areas for improvement.

STEP 4 /

Planning Next Steps

Historical data access allows the clients to analyse the plan for emission reduction, and the next steps in their sustainability journey. Clients, further, can purchase carbon credits from Climes to neutralise the residual emissions.

Plug-and-Play Carbon Intelligence, Engineered for Logistics

Leveraging our experience in both technological and carbon accounting, we crafted a formula to address the complexities Matchlog faced.

STEP 1 /

Emissions Mapping

Mapped carbon emissions across three modes of transportation — truck, ship, and rail — for all containerised movement.

  • Accurate fuel, distance, and mode-based emissions factors were applied

  • Streamlined into a methodology that fits MatchLog’s product and reporting cycle

STEP 2 /

Carbon Avoidance Framework

Beyond just calculating emissions, we developed a framework to quantify avoided emissions from reduced empty return trips — a core efficiency driver for MatchLog.

  • We used geospatial data (Google Road API) and operational logic to model what emissions would have occurred in a typical empty return scenario

  • Then we benchmarked this against actual optimised journeys, calculating “emissions avoided” per matched container

STEP 3 /

Enabling Climate Storytelling

MatchLog is actively using certified, trip-level carbon avoidance data to elevate ESG disclosures, pitch narratives, and customer conversations — positioning themselves as a sustainability-forward logistics partner.
